Private James Wright

 

James Wright was born on 10 January 1882 in English Street, Armagh, the first of four children of grocer Samuel Wright and his wife Mary (née Bratton). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Corporation, Armagh, with his widowed mother and a brother, and working as a grocer.

Wright enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 11 and 14 January 1915 (No.1399 – later Corps of Hussars No.71372). He trained at the regiment's Antrim reserve depot before embarking for France at the beginning of 1916. Initially posted to C Squadron, in April he was hospitalised for a fortnight at the 4th Stationary Hospital, suffering from psoriasis.

Wright remained with the regiment throughout the war, though how much time he spent in France and Belgium and how much at the Antrim depot is not known at present. On 12 March 1919 he was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.
